Announcement (October 2003)
Discontinuation of support for scVENUS 1.8.5 effective April 30th, 2004
As scVENUS 1.8.5 will not have a direct successor in the 1.8 branch, we would like to discontinue support for this version after April 30th, 2004. This will mean in detail:
- no bugfixes,
- no new platform support.
Discontinuation of support for direct upgrade from 1.8.x to 2.2.x
Effective with scVENUS 2.2.0, there will be no guarantee anymore for a direct upgrade from scVENUS version of the 1.8.x branch. Clusters using an 1.8.x version of scVENUS at the time scVENUS 2.2.x is released, will have to upgrade via 2.0 or 2.1. If this is not an option, we will be happy to assist you with additional support.
Discontinuation of support for V2/V3 packages
Effective with scVENUS 2.2.0, support for software packages of the formats V2 and V3 will be discontinued. This means in detail:
- commands scsoftfile, scsoftinfo and scsoftpkg will cease to exist,
- V2/V3 packages will not be found/recognized anymore by the scVENUS lookup mechanism,
- V2/V3 packages cannot be installed anymore by scVENUS means, e.g. scaddpkg.

2000
scVENUS 1.8 Release (December 2000)
New modules, new OS support
The system administration tool scVENUS, developed by science + computing ag, offers a framework for efficiently administrating heterogeneous UNIX-, Linux- and WindowsNT- environments. It is based on the modules software and configuration management as well as user and file system management.
Version 1.8 offers the following new features:
- scVENUS-Inventory facilitates querying host specific data (hard disc space), thereby providing asset management for the administration of large computer networks.
- By means of Monitoring the changing host specific features are registered (e.g. the hard disc space), thereby granting permanent control.
- From scVENUS 1.8 on SuSE 7.0, FreeBSD-4.x, Tru64 and MS Windows 2000 are also supported.
scVENUS 1.7 Release (May 2000)
Integration of Unix and Windows NT
science + computing released Version 1.7 of scVENUS last February 2000. scVENUS is a systems management tool that enables the transparent and efficient administration of heterogeneous Unix and WindowsNT systems. scVENUS offers easy management of system configurations, users and their files, as well as software packages. Through the use of scVENUS methods that are included in the distribution, the administrator can easily build a Single-System-Image environment for a seamless integration of the various operating systems in the cluster. The features that were added to the new release of scVENUS are:
- WindowsNT support:
scVENUS enables the integration of UNIX and WindowsNT machines through homogeneous file access on both sides. scVENUS also allows the automatic distribution of software on WindowsNT machines by using packages residing in a software depot. Third party software is packaged and stored in the depot and can then be installed on any machine in the cluster. Management of the WindowsNT systems also follows the scVENUS method concepts, that incorporates knowledge on the systemconfiguration.
- improved softwarehandling
- the Perl language can now be used for scVENUS methods, and all scVENUS functions are also available under Perl, both on UNIX as well as on WindowsNT clients.
